Freemake Video Converter Freemake Video Converter

Even easier to use than stated 5 stars
Look at the ratings and also look at the file size-this version is like 17MB, the closest competitor is 70MB?! I have only tried this one video program though but, I could do everything I wanted without even reading an instruction. I have an older point and shoot camera that makes (big) avi files. I was able to take 6-7 avi clips, press "join," choose a 5 MB output FLV file (from a total 40MB avi)and with one more click, I was ready to put it on a website. I am open to trying something else, but can't imagine anything being easier to use. Well worth considering. Price: Free Trial ($19.95)

JAlbum JAlbum

Great product, unreal that it's free 5 stars
JAlbum has been around for more than 8 years now. If you want to take photos and put them on the web, in a picture frame, in a book, it is an incredible product. You can even use it to just package your photos for an email. Java based so it works on any OS, 100+ custom skins plus easily create/modify your own. There is an online version and a desktop version. Includes its own ftp software or use your favorite (WinSCP, FileZilla, etc.) so you can upload to their site (yes, you even get some free hosting space) or to your own host. Jalbum generates a single directory with everything (slides, thumb nails, HTML pages, comments, etc). Upload to wherever. No idea what the previous reviewer was concerned about. If you have a digital camera and want to share your photos on the web, start right here. Price: Free Trial ($39.00)

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Caution advised on new version 8 4 stars
I have used AVG Free the past two years. It has worked fine (great?) and there have been no virus incidents. On trying to upgrade from 7.5 to new 8.0, I have one XP machine that can't make the upgrade-on install, keep getting message that there is "another" av or security package running. Numerous messages back and forth to their help forum (which is responsive although all volunteer) has not yielded resolution and no one can find this "other" av. Obviously AVG has been around a while and is a "free" program that gets good grades, but I'd highly recommend BEFORE upgrading or installing fresh, a trip to their Forum and a review of their "stickies." Note that version 7.5 is being phased out 5/31/08, updates though will be provided through Dec 2008-waiting may be a good option. Given that I now cannot install version 8 nor install my "old" version 7.5, I can't recommend the program despite the other ratings I provided. Price: Free

WinSCP WinSCP

Simple install, simple to use 5 stars
I've used WS_FTP LE (Lite Version) for years, then went to Filezilla (also very good, but a bit more sophisticated than what I need). I really like WinSCP. NO install problems on my Vista pc (And I hate Vista), easy to use and free (and easy to uninstall if necessary). Tough to beat those conditions. Price: Free
