Avast Free Antivirus Avast Free Antivirus

The leader of the pack. 5 stars
By far, AVAST is the best anti-virus package, and one that most users have never heard about. It's detection rate is better than any popular commercial product I've tested. Unlike other AV software, AVAST does not gobble up system resources or clutter your operating system with unwanted annoyances. The interface is clean and easy to use. Also, it's one of few AV products that can scan before windows loads, which is vital to preventing infection. You can use the free version as long as you want without any hassles but it's worth every penny if you buy it. Price: Free

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Good but not the best. 3 stars
AVG is on par with most major anti-virus packages. It's fairly easy to setup and has a robust set of features for free software. However, it does hog system resources and its detection success isn't extremely good. Price: Free

TrueCrypt TrueCrypt

The best encryption software you can get free 5 stars
If you buy encryption software, you're wasting your money. TC is better than most commercial products on the market and also more secure. Stop looking for something better. There isn't anything better. Price: Free
