Superb 5 stars
I wanted to convert some mp4s to mp3s. I downloaded this free app, and within minutes had the desired mp3s. There are loads of options for video files as well, which look really useful, especially for converting files to use on portable media devices. Full marks from me for doing exactly what it said on the tin. Price: Free

Eraser Eraser

Certainly adequate for home use 4 stars
I used this to wipe a hard drive before selling my PC on ebay, to remove any possibility of my stored passwords and personal files being recovered by an unscrupulous buyer. I then tried a myriad of recovery programs (free and paid-for) and none could find any files to recover, which is good enough for me. Some of the other reviews on here are frankly quite disturbing - what on earth do you guys have on your hard drive that you would want to be protected from forensic investigation? The RIAA aren't that bothered about your mp3s, seriously. Professional data recovery services aren't cheap. You're safe with Eraser. Price: Free

Slawdog Smart Shutdown Slawdog Smart Shutdown

Perfectly simple 5 stars
Easy to use and does exactly what it says. I use it to send my PC into hibernation at night so I can play music while I'm falling asleep, but it can do many other things too (see the program description). Simple and effective. Price: Free

AIMP AIMP

Great, but.. 4 stars
I wanted to love this player, I really did. I wanted to have and to hold it til something better did us part. Compared to my current player, it's prettier and has a far better jukebox facility. It has some cool features, such as hot-keys, a nice big EQ, and a slide out panel that allows you to slow the music down without changing the pitch (and vice versa). It uses less system resources than my current player, and doesn't momentarily freeze my PC with 100% CPU usage when I open the media library. However, it is missing two things. Firstly, it won't give you virtual surround sound so that your music plays out of all your speakers. I hate having un-used speakers. Secondly, it doesn't sound as good as JetAudio (my current player). I played with the EQ for a long while, and it just can't make any genre of music sound as rich and textured as JetAudio can. Ultimately a music player is only as good as it sounds, so for now I stick with JetAudio. Price: Free
