Open Source Storage Platform FreeNAS is an Open Source Storage Platform based on FreeBSD and supports sharing across Windows, Apple, and UNIX-like systems. FreeNAS includes ZFS, a combined file system and logical volume manager that supports high storage capacities and data integrity validation. The software is designed to from a USB drive on a dedicated machine. You can use an old computer and use internal or extenal hard drives as storage volumes. The initial setup is fairly simple, you create the bootable USB or Flash drive and then use it to boot the host computer. Configuring the FreeNAS shares is a little more technical and requires some networking experience although detailed documentation is provided. Copyright Snapfiles.com
