monitor hard drive health HDD Guardian provides a graphical interface to smartctl, an open source tool for querying and controlling SMART attributes data on modern hard disk drives. The program checks your hard drive's S.M.A.R.T attributes every four hours and alerts you in case of imminent failure, high temperature or other vital parameter changes. HDD Guardian provides a quick overview screen that shows the current HDD temperature and health status as well as any warnings or errors that were detected during the last check. You can also review the values for individual S.M.A.R.T attributes, enable or disable HDD features, customize the monitoring settings and modify advanced Smartctl settings. Other features include an option to run test manually, support for external drives, detailed hard drive information, error logging, and more. Warning: This software should not be used with Samsung F4 EcoGreen drives without applying the vendor provided patch. Read details here Copyright Snapfiles.com

I like the fact that HDD Guardian allows you to avoid waking drives to check their S.M.A.R.T. status. This is something CrystalDiskInfo does not have. However, I found problem after problem with HDD Guardian. I lost track of all the exceptions I encountered. One of them was because the application requires elevation, but does not request it (the author says they will fix this). But others were not so easy to figure out. I also found that despite being configured to update every 5 minutes, it never did--or at least, the main window and tray icons never updated, unless I forced an update in the main window. This makes me wonder if it is updating and just not updating the interface, or if it's just not updating at all. Another issue is that you can't really configure it to warn you about high temperatures. If you enable temperature warnings, it will put up a notification for EVERY little temperature change--even if the temp goes DOWN 1 degree and is well below the threshold! Why? I have no idea. It doesn't make any sense. Back to CrystalDiskInfo I go. show Review details

Tried this app today when got S.M.A.R.T. warning on Windows 7. Go figure, in 15 years that is the first time I ever got a hard disc warning from Windows. Anyway the warning as vague, ran the HD diagnostic tool from mfg and not much better just a fail notice. Now comes HDD Guardian. Shows me the failure, shows me what is wrong with a description of the failure and what the reliability of the drive is. I know snapfiles did not have a screen shot like that probably due to all good drives. Perfect app to show someone that they really have a bad drive and not just suspect. Only thing is I wish it could print a report. I recommend this to anyone wishing to verify disc failure. PS. Snapfiles if you would like a screen shot with errors just contact me at registered email.
