open-source file archiver 7Zip is an open-source file archiver, that offers a the highest compression ratio, using the new f 7z format, which delivers compression results that are usually 30-50% better than standard ZIP. We tested it with a server log file, which compressed with ZIP had a file size of 18 mb and using 7-Zip was reduced to 8 mb (results may vary, depending on file type). In addition, 7Zip also supports 7z, ZIP, CAB, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, TAR, CPIO, RPM and DEB formats, so it can be used with all popular archive files as well. The program offers a basic file explorer interface and also integrates into the Windows right-click menu. You can associate 7zip with any of the supported formats and also offers command-line support. Interface and additional features are fairly basic, but the compression ratio is outstanding. This project is the best zip utility out there. It works seemlessly and integrates into your system easily. It's fast, has a small foot print, and the support for all archive types on the market. 7-zip is very light, fast, easy to use and has a simple GUI and 64bit support. All basic features are here for the casual user. Here are the formats listed on their website: "High compression ratio in 7z format with LZMA and LZMA2 compression Supported formats: Packing & Unpacking: 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP and WIM. Unpacking Only: ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, CramFS, DEB, DMG, FAT, HFS, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MBR, MSI, NSIS, NTFS, RAR, RPM, SquashFS, UDF, VHD, WIM, XAR and Z." Also included are an AES-256 Zip & 7-zip encrypter, 7-zip self extractor, Windows shell integration, File manager, command-line version & FAR manager plugin." So far 9.20 has been the last stable version since 2010. A stable release has not had any new features or improvements for years. A new 15.05 beta version with improvements is available, so what is happening? Why are all these betas released with no stable one? Also the 8-bit GUI is just ugly these days. Some new icons with more options for the toolbar would be appreciated. It is a really good archiver if you only need it for simple packing & unpacking archives and not much more, but if you are looking for more features you will be better off using another archiver that can do the same as 7-zip and more such as PeaZip, Bandizip or ZipGenius. If you insist on using 7-zip then you are better off using the 15.05 beta version with fixes, but a stable version would be much preferred. show Review details

I don't know that this tool supports a lot of archive formats that are popular in other OSs than MS Windows such as DMG, XAR in Mac OS, Deb in Linux until I need to write an tutorial of how to extract content from a file (.dmg) which is actually in XAR format. From that, I see 7-zip as an excellent archive tool. I highly recommend it for cross-platform users. show Review details
