The original WSE used to have an option to automatically update virus definitions on a regular basis - in Windows 8, these update are now provided via "Windows Update" and you will only receive automatic definition updates if you selected to "Install updates automatically". To fix this, Windows Update Notifier includes an option to receive automatic Windows Defender updates without having to choose the "Install updates automatically" option for all Windows updates.
