Good & safe, but repeat defragging needed 3 stars by realbull2009250 Jul 16, 2015 (Read all my 60 reviews)
UltraDefrag has the following features: defrag, quick optimization, full optimization, individual file & folder defrag, scheduling, boot time defrag, command-line, full list report and file & folder exclusion. See their website for a very nice detailed explanation. Also it is fully compatible with 64bit OS. The GUI is simple enough for beginners. It has one-click buttons to start the several most used functions. But, clicking on the "Options" icon will bring up a .lua file to adjust settings which is mostly about filtering and GUI. This may bewilder beginners even though there are explanations written. A menu to add files & folders and check boxes would be much easier. UltraDefrag has a different approach to defrag files than others; it defrags only the necessary files(see website for details). Therefore if you want all files defragmented you'll need to defrag again. In my experience I used the "Full Optimization", but it left many defragmented files. Running a Defrag, Quick Optimization or defrag the files or folders individually will fix this. I also did a Boot Time defrag. Unfortunately the MFT files were not defragmented(I had to use Contig). I tried the "MFT Optimization" option which places movable MFT files closest to the unmovable ones. For my computer, it didn't seem to do anything. Overall UltraDefrag seems to be a good and safe defragger. The one click icons are easy to use, but other settings may be hard for beginners to set-up. show Review details
The only one to trust 4 stars by Klatuu Jan 10, 2012 (Read all my 29 reviews)
After testing several defrag programs on 64-bit systems, this is the only one that seems to work. Others can destroy restore points. It's very fast, and very safe - and while the interface isn't anything to write home about, it is fine once you figure it all out. This is the only defrag program I'd recommend - period. show Review details
Adequate 3 stars by Harlan May 30, 2010 (Read all my 69 reviews)
There are lots of defraggers available, including the one that comes with Windows. This one works adequately in every way. It is small and appears to work properly, although not too thoroughly. It can defrag at bootup, a minor advantage over some of the others. Considering the basic functionality, though, the interface is poorly implemented (for example, incomplete color legend, incomplete help files, options changed by editing .lua text files, choice of lengthy report files or none at all), and the speed is nothing special. Optimization is slow and hard to cancel out of. MyDefrag is a widely-used alternative (don't waste your time trying to learn and use its overkill scripting language), although it is confusing enough that several people have written GUIs for it. Anyway, unless your disk is almost full and you have massive fragmentation, defragging will provide little, if any, perceptible improvement in system speed. show Review details
The best 5 stars by jlhns40 May 22, 2008 (Read all my 10 reviews)
This defrag beats them all. It analyzes, defrags and compacts. Fast. Thorough. It has filters to exclude desired folders. System Volume Information, temp, and recycler are defaulted filters. I added Sandboxie to the filters. When I check the report it lists these files with a black background with white print. Previous reviewer wondered why it didn't defrag all the files listed. Possibly the filtered strings are the answer. This is an excellent program. show Review details
It's a winner ! 5 stars by gbjennings Dec 07, 2007 (Read all my 21 reviews)
This defragger not only does a great job, but it comes in a portable version (included with the download) as well. Seems to work very well on my Vista platform. Thanks and keep up the great work ! show Review details
Looks are everything 2 stars by farpointstation2 Oct 23, 2007 (Read all my 7 reviews)
UltraDefrag 1.2.1 looks very good; the GUI is eye catching and very colorful. Unfortunately, the performance of UltraDefrag 1.2.1 leaves much to be desired! I tested UltraDefrag on my 200GB HDD with about 50% of free space; UltraDefrag found 700+ fragmented files; it defragged 300+ files leaving 400+ files still fragmented! I'm not referring to System files or other HDD files that can't be defragged; the un-defragged files were music files, text files, etc; just ordinary files. UltraDefrag does provide the user with a very nice listing of the un-defragged files, I would just like to know why the files weren't defragmented! I'll pass on this HDD defragger! show Review details
