text editor with syntax highlighting BowPad is a small and fast text editor with a ribbon user interface and syntax highlighting. It supports customizable syntax highlight configuration for more than 100 file types and scripting languages and supports a variety of encoding types. The ribbon-style toolbar provides quick access to many common text management features (comment, duplicate lines, upper/lower case etc.) as well as custom command options. There is also an alternate "Dark Theme" available for those who prefer coding on a dark background. Copyright Snapfiles.com

A powerful editor, but too developer-oriented 2 stars by LowStrung May 15, 2015 (Read all my 16 reviews)
I agree with Harlan that BowPad's ribbon interface is clunky, but ribbons are clunky in other programs, too. Something I find especially irritating in BowPad is the pop-up infotip you get when hovering over any numbers in the text. The infotip displays the hex, binary and decimal values of the number. A programmer might appreciate that, but I'm not a programmer, and it always gets in my way when trying to read text in non-technical documents, e-books, for example. Why on earth would I want to see the hexadecimal value of a date? You can't shut that feature off, either, nor can you disable the syntax highlighting of HTML files. I prefer AkelPad, where the extra features are plugins that can be disabled or removed altogether if they're not needed. show Review details
Ribbon interface, not enough features 3 stars by Harlan Apr 30, 2014 (Read all my 69 reviews)
Portable, so it installs and is ready for use immediately. The ribbon interface will be familiar to anyone who uses MS Office 2007+. It provides simple but sometimes clunky access to all features, but there just are not enough of them. Even basic text editors like AkelPad and Notepad++ do far more, and their menu-and-toolbar user interfaces are fine for text editing. BowPad is better than the Notepad that comes with Windows, but it is not good enough to replace any of the popular free third-party text editors. show Review details
