organize your desktop into sections Fences enables you to organize your desktop by setting visual boundaries for your desktop icons. The default settings will organize your desktop icons by type (Programs, Web Links, Documents etc.) but you can easily customize the layout by creating your own fences. Each fence area will keep your icons within it`s boundary and add scrollbars if the number of icons exceeds the size of the area you defined. In addition to fenced areas, the program also offers Folder Portals (access folder content directly from the desktop) and Desktop Pages, which allow you to quickly switch between multiple desktops. Well thought out software 5 stars by goshtac419 Dec 24, 2012 (Read all my 3 reviews)
I have been into computers since the early 80's and have used many free programs out there. I find that Stardock Fences is a must have now that I found it here. With way too many desktop icons to deal with, I find this program is 5 out of 5. It is easy to use and set up and gives your desktop a new well laid out look. The only minor downside was the auto setup if you decide to use that feature as I found it much easier to just set up your own fences and title them from the start. Very often free software leaves you wanting, but this program does just what it says and being free, you can't beat the price.. I don't normally post software reviews, but after installing Fences, I felt I had to say something. As to my system, I am running Win 7 Pro 64 bit, so I cannot speak for other OS versions.. show Review details

Been looking for something like this for a while. Cool feature - double-click on your desktop and all the fenced in groups hide. Double-click again and the re-appear. show Review details
Fenced in 4 stars by gimpguy Apr 17, 2011 (Read all my 1159 reviews)
My first thought about this program was, ok, why would I need something like this? My last thought was, why would I need something like this? For one, it fences your icons on your desktop into boxes, groups, etc... however, I don't see the purpose. You can align icons to grid and move them into groups yourself. The auto group really didn't know where to put the icons and I found myself moving them anyway, which once again, you can do without this. Aside from the above, it adds a transparent configurable box, er.. fence around groups of icons and labels them. I'm not sure yet again, why anyone would need to label a group of icons as icons typically reflect the what program it is so if you aligned IE, Firefox, Opera, etc... you know they are browser icons. With all that, some may find this handy, I can't say they won't and it does run rather well, it's different, customizable and hey, it's free. If some people, like my son, have no wallpaper due to desktop icons covering up the screen, this may be for you. For people who don't have so many, I can't see a reason to use it unless for fun and looks. Still a decent free app. show Review details
