streaming media server Plex Media Server enables you to stream your movies, music and photos from your PC to a Roku, Google TV or DLNA compatible device (e.g. PS3, Xbox 360). You can also stream your media to another computer or a mobile device (Android, iOS...) with the help of available client apps. The server is very easy to set up - once you installed the server, simply point it to the folders that contain the media files you want to share. Plex will then start indexing those folders and automatically download cover art and other meta data to create a professional looking media library for you. Your movies and TV shows are presented with themed backgrounds, cover art, plot overview and cross-linked cast as well as technical details. Plex supports a wide range of video, audio and photo formats as well as online content from Plex Channels. The server supports on-the-fly transcoding which enables you to stream file formats even if they are not natively supported on your device (e.g. you can view Xvid movies on your Roku without having to convert the files first). Its db mixed up my videos, photos and music 2 stars by henerey773 Jan 21, 2017 (Read all my 37 reviews)
For me (YMMV) this latest v1.3.3.3148 from Jan 20, 2017 didn't correctly identify my local media in my folders I pointed it at - videos, photos, music. It did allow me to do the pointing to these folders on my media storage drive, without complaint, good. But then when browsing on the Win7 PC or on the big TV, the videos folder was full of photos and music as well, a mishmash of media. Same thing when viewing the photos or music folders. Thank god it didn't touch my actual files, it just built its own database wrong. Maybe it would work better if you have the default My Photos etc on C. Or maybe it's a result of the Plex program insisting on a libraries and playlist model, like iTunes, instead of being user-folders oriented. No such problem with Serviio, flawless in that regard. The other problem, more of a small annoyance, is that when first run nothing showed up on the Win7 Taskbar except a tray icon. Popping that and opening PLEX, nothing happened. It turns out one has to not only have a Plex online 'account', but one has to be logged in there, and then the UI works. It's all in the browser. No such problem with Serviio. show Review details
Awesome movievideo manager and server 5 stars by rga.dawg395 Oct 03, 2016
This is an awesome local application that uses a robust media server to let other devices stream content from the server. Once installed you can manage all your movie/video content from the server computer, then access the content from multiple devices, or from the web, or from cloud space. Some of the features are limited in the Free version, mainly the number of devices you can stream from, and some of the other features like Movie Trailers, Previews, Cloud access, etc. All of the features are enabled with a Plex Membership, which is a very nice value at 39.99 per year. Even without a Plex membership (Plex Pass) you can do quite a lot with it. I use it mainly with my samsung smart TV. The samsung smart TV has a Plex app which makes playing the content very easy. I also have a Win7 Plex player on my laptop, and a Plex player on my Android show Review details
