EditPad Lite EditPad Lite

A good compromize 4 stars
I wanted something in freeware between my regular, programmable shareware The SemWare Editor and Windows' own Notepad. The problem with text editors is that there are so many to choose from. It took some SnapFiles reading and even Googling to decide which one to try out. I chose EditPad Lite to try since it has file tabs and most importantly it supports a lot of different text encodings which is crucial for a European and a user who also has much old DOS text files occasionally to deal with. After installing, I noticed some further nice facets. The configuration option "Send to menu" is convenient, since by invoking it one does not have to edit all one's file associations. The somewhat involved configuration options require at least medium computer literary, but the options are very useful. I probably managed to make a very good choice, even if I do not know what I may have missed in some of the others. Price: Free

IrfanView IrfanView

The number one freeware image viewer 4 stars
Considering that this image and photo viewer is free, it has a truly impressive set of features. Furthermore, much of what is missing from the base package, such as viewing video clips can be added by downloading and installing plugins. Now even a plugin for some image editing is available, although keeping all the modules up to date naturally takes some effort. Extra bonus: What I need and like is that Irfan also includes command line processing. That is very handy say for creating a set of thumbnails at one go. And the author has been very helpful. Thanks! What I would still like to have to make Irfan near perfect would be a much better red-eye correction. To be useful, the relevant area selection should optionally be circular, not just rectangular. FreeCommander XE FreeCommander XE

Definitely belongs to one`s utility set 4 stars
I have been using this file management program regularly for quite awhile. It definitely is worth having in one's tools set as an addition for managing one's files. Nothing is perfect, though. But considering the zero price FreeCommander is outright excellent. Well, using the file comparison is somewhat complicated and one would like optionally to be able to enter folder names by typing besides the browsing. The number of features included is impressive, especially for freeware. It definitely adds what strangely is missing from e.g. XP's default file management and what we used to have in the old days in the 16-bit Windows 3.11. My compliments to the authors. Price: Free

SUPERAntiSpyware Free SUPERAntiSpyware Free

A nice product 4 stars
A nice product, especially being free. However, any program should have its own uninstall module. It is not a good thing to rely on Windows' add/remove programs. Not all the users in a domain always have suitable privileges for removing even when installing can be done. Freeware and free trials are often used to test alternative programs. The uninstall option must be readily available in a program. [Editor: This program does provide the standard uninstall options from Add/Remove programs] Price: Free

ViceVersa Free ViceVersa Free

Serves its purpose 4 stars
This is a specialized utility for comparing the contents two folders and optionally synchronizing them. No bells and whistles, but if you need a utility exactly for this purpose, then this is the one to get. One useful feature in ViceVersa Free, lacking in some more feature-laden utilities, is the ability to align the contents of the selected folders correctly side by side. The display method of the comparison results is excellent. Easy to understand. The downside is that if you wish to change folders the navigation is rather crude. Price: Free
