create encrypted containers and mount them as drives VeraCrypt is an encryption software that enables you to create encrypted containers to store your sensitive files and documents. An encrypted container file can be stored anywhere on your computer or and external media and mounted as a virtual drive that can be accessed via a regular drive letter. Any file that is stored on this virtual drive is automatically encrypted on-the-fly, and can only be accessed while the drive is mounted and unlocked with the correct password or key. In addition to creating secure storage containers, the software can also be used to encrypt an entire system partition or drive. VeraCrypt supports a variety of encryption algorithms, including AES-256, Blowfish (448-bit key), CAST5, Serpent, Triple DES, and Twofish. Other features include support for FAT32 or NTFS formatting, hidden volumes, hotkeys for mounting/dismounting and several other advanced features. VeraCrypt can be installed in portable mode unless you want to encrypt your system partitions. VeraCrypt is based on the (discontinued) TrueCrypt open source project and offers the possibility to convert TrueCrypt containers and non-system partitions to VeraCrypt format. Best tried and true crypt tool! 5 stars by busybusy Jan 30, 2022 (Read all my 257 reviews)
VeraCrypt is a proven implementation of encryption. It has been third-party audited and has been build on solid programming when it was TrueCrypt. I use it for both desktops and especially USB sticks of importance. I'd like to say thanks to the group IDRIX for carrying to the torch on this amazing piece of software. It's my go to encryption tool and its portable to boot. show Review details
Good clone of truecrypt, but very, very slow 2 stars by ianmacm Aug 20, 2016 (Read all my 174 reviews)
VeraCrypt is intended to be an up to date replacement for TrueCrypt, which was discontinued in 2014. The interface of VeraCrypt is basically a clone of TrueCrypt, but it is not compatible with files that have been encrypted for it. The main issue is the time taken to load encrypted volumes or devices. 30-90 seconds is quite normal and older processors may take double that time. VeraCrypt says that this is necessary for improved security, but after a while I became tired of being able to boil an egg before the volumes and devices loaded. Similar on-the-fly encryption programs can mount the encrypted files much more quickly, and I think that the trade-off for improved security is being spoiled by the egg timer wait for them to load with VeraCrypt. Unless you are trying to keep a top level expert from accessing your files, it may be better to stick to a program that loads the encrypted files in a more reasonable length of time. show Review details
Very good truecrypt replacement 5 stars by Harlan Feb 15, 2016 (Read all my 69 reviews)
If you trust it (I do), this is an excellent package. Very similar to TrueCrypt in most ways, including how easy it is to use in basic mode and how much more complicated it is to use in "paranoid" mode. The delay in mounting volumes is very long, even on a fast machine. This release (1.17) has reduced that delay noticeably, but you still have time to make coffee while it works. Opened volumes process with no apparent delays, and there is also no delay when closing them. The primary disadvantages are the slow volume mounting and the inability to use a keyfile during the boot process. The ability to encrypt the whole disk or partition is an enormous advantage, since it eliminates any concern with sensitive information being left in the page or hibernation files, or in disk free space, or in file slack areas or alternate streams. Be sure to create a "rescue disk." show Review details
