MiniTool Partition Wizard Free

Highly recommended and reliable software.

There was excess space that was not being used in my other partition, so I needed to resize my partitions without having to reformat my HDD. PartWiz Home did that just that without hassle and for free. The interface is very easy to use and if you still need help, their official website both has written and video tutorials which are very easy to follow. It also has the "Using Enhanced Data Protecting Mode", which protects data during the resizing process. PartWiz Home delivers! Price: Free

ISO Recorder

Excellent cd-to-cd feature!

ISO Recorder can easily perform a direct (on-the-fly) disc-to-disc copy using a single optical drive. (1) Mount source disc, (2) let ISO create a temporary image file, (3) remove source discmount blank disc, and (4) let ISO Recorder burn the temporary image file. This very light program integrates so seamlessly, you would not even notice it is there. Simply right-click on your optical drive and you will see the options it offers (which also includes creating an image from the inserted disc). Surely it does not have features like other ISO giants have, but ISO Recorder is definitely great for those quick CD-to-CD copies. I mainly installed it for that purpose. All in all a good program to keep. Price: Free

Functionality over beauty

While it is agreeable that that interface is not the most user-friendly at first glance, it can be easily studied in two minutes. The Visual Document module allows for extracting selected pages, reordering them, and finally merging them into a new PDF via drag-n-drop. The user is also able to save the environment (e.g. selection, reordering) in an XML file, which can be modified later. PDFsam may not be the "prettiest" software most lay users look for, but it surely delivers what it promises to do. Price: Free

Light, efficient, and brilliant!

Converting multiple images to a single PDF is a breeze with options which are pretty much self-explanatory. The user interface is very easy to learn and the drag-n-drop function makes up for added convenience. Some might say i2pdf lacks features or "uninteresting", but that is essentially the beauty of this tiny app. Supports major image formats like JPG, PNG, BMP, TIFF and GIF and does what it should efficiently without the bulk and frills of its paid counterparts. Needs drag-n-drop.

The conversion UI could be further improved to a single drag-n-drop tab instead of having separate tabs for individual and folder conversions. Batch conversion could also use the "Constrain Proportions" option, in case users want an exact resize for multiple images. Apart from that, a fast and light tool which gets the job done no doubt. Nice work John, will surely keep an eye on further developments! Price: Free

Because Duplicate File Finder uses byte-for-byte comparison, duplicate files are nailed with 100% accuracy regardless of different file names, creation date, etc. as compared to other tools for the job. The interface is not too fancy - simple and direct - just how it should be. You will learn to navigate through the program in less than a minute. Way better than the default defragmenter.

AusLogics Disk Defrag does its job very well - and fast! After the defragmenting process, it will show your system's added performance in nice percentage bars - simple, yet informative. It doesn't have support for individual file/folder defragmentaion yet, but this little tool is highly recommended! Price: Free

The almost all-around image burner!

ImgBurn supports almost all major image formats. I say "almost" because it couldn't support ALL formats of course. It is a very handy image burning software and getting around the UI is simply child's play. Use ImgBurn to burn you .ISO, .BIN, .MDS/.MDF etc. Recommended to be used along with a burning suite which often lacks image burning support. Price: Free

Ashampoo Burning Studio Free

A freeware giant.

We should all be thankful for the creators/developers of great freeware programs such as this! If you can't afford to purchase the big ones out there, Ashampoo Burning Studio Free is the best choice! UI doesn't only look sexy, it's also very user-friendly to first-time users. This baby allows data verification and even has BD burning support. Perhaps, the flaw it has would be the DVD-movie burning. ABSF can't burn DVD-movie from video files (e.g. AVI); they should be converted to "DVD-movie folders" (i.e. AUDIO_TS, VIDEO_TS), but aside from that, it does its data burning and other tasks very well. Highly recommended! Price: Free

OpenOffice

Stick with ooo 2.4.1 for the time being.

OOo 3.0 sure is an eye candy, but when it comes to Features and Ease of Use, it gets a relatively "Poor" rating. One major problem is that it has issues automatically integrating with previous MS Office files. For example, even after installing 3.0, .doc's still open in WordPad and .ppt's weren't associated with any program - meaning, they have that weird "unknown" icon that we all know Windows uses when a file type isn't associated with any software to open it with. Add that to the supposedly "easier" setup UI, there are just too many features that makes 3.0 complicated rather than helpful. It is advised to stick with 2.4.1 for a while, since it appears to be more stable and user-friendly. I would still recommend OOo, just not this version. Price: Free

Revo Uninstaller

Really good, but with reboot issues.

Revo Uninstaller encounters problems when the software to be uninstalled requires a reboot. When you opt to "Restart Later" and let Revo continue the job, it hangs during the leftover files deletion. If you decide to "Restart Now", then Revo won't be able to delete the leftover files and registry. Price: Free

Wise Disk Cleaner Free

This tool is good, but...

...for some unknown reason, WDC messes up with MS Office. It seems to delete an important temporary file during the cleaning process, which corrupts the installation of MS Office. I had to re-install the whole thing again. WDC is not a bad software. When the bug has been fixed, I'm looking forward to using this again in the future. Price: Free
