Old and fugly

You will see another review here, suggesting that it edits RTF files. That review was written by a liar. The person who wrote it tells lies (and makes the baby Jesus cry). Metapad does nothing of the sort - don't waste your time. It might be good at what it does, I don't know, I didn't waste time finding out: it's old, it's fugly, it doesn't handle RTF files; that's all I need to know and all you need to know too - well, apart from the fact that you can (and should) used EditPad instead (because, whilst it doesn't handle RTF files either, it's still being updated).

I've tried almost all of them, and Metapad is THE BEST notepad replacement I have seen in years. It does everything that notepad does and much more, including the ability to render RTF files, which many notepad replacements won't do. You can look all day long, but you won't find a better notepad replacement than Metapad.

Yep, as stated, if looking to replace notepad, this will do just fine. I like the transparency setting and line count. It's a step above notepad but not over done for basic text use.

Perfect fast notepad replacement

Do it now! Replace Micro$oft Notepad with Metapad right away! Metapad is super fast and super simple. It has a toolbar with its own "always on top" button (very important), and wordwrap button. It can switch between two fonts, and has a hotkey "insert string" function. You can set it to remember its last size and position. And it looks nice. If what you are looking for is a very simple and fast notpad, this is it. There are directions on the Metapad site on how to replace Micro$oft's notepad completely with metapad. It is one of the first things I will do on any new computer. If there were one con I would think of, it is that it doesn't do tabs. But there are other programs for that. This is fast and simple text viewing.

To skysenshi who complained about the lack of line numbers, just look at the bottom of metapad and you will see all the needed line information. Metapad is Metagood.

MetaPad is the most beautiful piece of free software ever written. After 7 years of testing out dozens of text editors (both shareware & freeware alike), I have never come across a more stable, versatile and user-friendly program. Nowadays, I cannot imagine how I ever got along without it. MetaPad is the perfect Notepad replacement, the perfect all-purpose file viewer, and the perfect HTML/CSS/DHTML/PHP/Javascript editor. This is a must-have program for both experienced Windows users and novices.
