XMedia Recode XMedia Recode

This was a fantastic media recoder 3 stars
The latest versions of this software seem to take forever to load for one reason or another. I use V3.4.4.8 and it does virtually everything. Later versions exhibit the startup problem. Price: Free

Bat To Exe Converter Bat To Exe Converter

Still the best bat to exe converter. 5 stars
Have used this gem for years and my only suggestion for improvement is to have the EXE file name mimic the BAT file name automatically, as it used to in past editions. Most BAT files are already named for the application they will be converted to and that feature was a great time saver. Please add an option to allow the EXE file name to be created from the BAT file name. Price: Free

JPEG Saver JPEG Saver

Absolutely the best! 5 stars
Been using this beauty for many years - all the way back to Windows 98! It's the best screensaver for displaying your photos, period. The fact that it's free is simply icing on the cake. Price: Free

SyncBack Free SyncBack Free

One fantastic piece of freeware 5 stars
This is the best program for backing up precisely what you want backed up and ignoring what you don't. I've been using SyncBack for many years and stick with V5.20 on my Win 7 PC. Beginning with V6.0, the footprint of this utility began growing like a mushroom. Since V5.20 does everything I want and need it to do, I simply don't upgrade. Price: Free

DriveLetterView DriveLetterView

It does exactly what it's intended to do 5 stars
Occupying well under 100K (yes, K) of disk space and 100 portable (meaning NO writing to the registry or folder other than it's own,) this little gem is by far the fastest and easiest way to show and manipulate your device drive letters. Thank you Nir Sofer! Price: Free

Advanced BAT to EXE Converter Advanced BAT to EXE Converter

One of the very best bat converters 5 stars
I have been using this BAT to EXE converter for several years now and it is great. Write your batch file and then convert it to an executable, with several options available, including the ability to run the EXE file invisibly and to include a range of file information. Best of all, it's easy to use and it's free! Five stars. Price: Free

Atlantis Word Processor Atlantis Word Processor

Portable it is not 1 stars
This app is advertised as 'portable.' That it is not. It not only writes new folders and files to your PC, but entries to your registry, as well. That is certainly not my definition of 'portable.' Price: Free Trial ($35.00)

SoftPerfect RAM Disk SoftPerfect RAM Disk

Excellent ram disk 4 stars
I have been using another RAM Disk software for a number of years, but this replaced it. It does everything the vast majority of users could ask for. My only suggestion is to allow the user to put the RAMDiskWS.xml file in the program folder (instead of the ProgramData folder) to keep all files in the same folder. Price: Free Trial ($29.00)

FreeFileSync FreeFileSync

One major option still missing... 2 stars
This would and should be one of the best folder synchronization utilities available with one exception: There is no way to set a 'default' set of folders for the application to open up to. Instead, it opens to whatever two folders were last used. It stands to reason that a Sync Utility would either allow the user to choose the default folders, or at the very least open to the top level of folders on the two drives - e.g., C: and D:. In past versions at least the user could set the GlobalSettings, xml file to Read Only to get around this issue, but that is no longer possible. Price: Free

CCleaner Portable CCleaner Portable

At least one tiny problem remains... 5 stars
At least one problem remains in the latest version - V3.20.1750. If you COPY either your SendTo menu or your Program Files menu (or any part of it) to a TEMP folder and then delete the copy from there to the Recycle.Bin, CCleaner will delete the folder contents (the .lnk files) but not those folders themselves. Looking in Windows Explorer, it APPEARS that CCleaner deleted them, but viewing them through a superior file manager such as XYplorer, or better yet from the Command Line, you will see those folders still exist. Other than this one fairly insignificant annoyance, it's one of the greatest utilities out there. Keep up the great work, Piriform! Price: Free

Startup Delayer Startup Delayer

A fantastic utility 5 stars
I have used Startup Delayer for at least ten years and wouldn't be without it. If you want icons arranged in a specific order in your tray or if you want to control which applications start at certain times during startup, this is the last piece of software you will need. And it's FREE, as well. Price: Free

ClearLock ClearLock

Could use some enhancements. 3 stars
It works good 'as is', but could use a little enhancing to make it 'very good.' For example, the ability to change the default sound. At a minimum, don't compress the EXE file, so that advanced users may modify the sound as they please. Next, allow the user to minimize the Password box to the tray and restore it with a user defined key combination. This would make for a nice, clean screen while ClearLock is active. There may be more, but those are the main ones. -- Editor's note: The password box completely disappears from view after a few minutes and becomes visible again once you use the mouse or keyboard. -- Price: Free

Metapad Metapad

Outstanding ! 5 stars
I've tried almost all of them, and Metapad is THE BEST notepad replacement I have seen in years. It does everything that notepad does and much more, including the ability to render RTF files, which many notepad replacements won't do. You can look all day long, but you won't find a better notepad replacement than Metapad. Price: Free

FileTypesMan FileTypesMan

It's outstanding ! 5 stars
I am a huge fan of Nir Sofer, and this utility is no exception to the rule. It works great and I find it far easier to use than wading through Microsoft's file and folder options to accomplish the same thing. And, as opposed to an earlier comment, you can indeed make system changes with this program. My guess is the last reviewer is not familiar with the context menu. ;-) Price: Free

Fantastic secure deletion utility with the additional ability to securely delete your hard drive`s free space. This monster has sooo many tweaks. Almost mind boggling. Really a great piece of software BUT it is definitely a bit on the pricey side, considering less expensive and even free ones available.
